A main sequence star has reached an equilibrium where they produce enough energy through nuclear fusion to balance out push against gravity and hold up its outer shell. Nuclear fusion happens inside of all stars in the sky. Nuclear fusion turns hydrogen atoms into helium atoms. Polaris has reached an equilibrium and will maintain it for many millions of years.
